Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about NUCs.

What’s included in a NUC?

A standard NUC includes 4 deep frames (brood, food, and an expansion frame), a locally mated queen, adult bees, and a reusable nuc box (as described above).

When is pickup?

Pickup window: end of May + early June. After you reserve, we’ll email your exact pickup date/time and simple instructions for a smooth handoff.

How does the deposit work?

You reserve your NUC with a $50 deposit per NUC. The remaining $190 is due at pickup.

What do I need to bring on pickup day?

Bring a vehicle with a stable, level spot for the nuc and (ideally) a strap/tie-down. Keep the colony cool and out of direct sun on the drive home, and plan to install it the same day if possible.

Can pickup timing change?

Spring conditions can shift schedules slightly. If anything changes, we’ll communicate as early as possible with clear next steps.

Can I return the nuc box?

Yes — there’s a $15 refund for any Backed by Bees nuc box returned within a year in good shape.

Is a NUC good for beginners?

Yes. NUCs are a strong way to start. Just make sure your equipment is ready ahead of pickup and you have a plan to install the colony promptly.
