How long have you been an Adopt a Hive member? What inspired you to signup?
We’ve been Adopt a Hive members since 2023.
On the day that we visited Backed by Bees, we were instantly mesmerized by the entire experience (the walk, the vegetation, the little info signs, the insects, the bees, the staff; even the building was interesting and impressive. We were informed about the Adopt a Hive program and after a very quick family chat, we decided to adopt a hive. As raw honey consumers, we were giddy at the idea of harvesting our “own” honey. So, it was an awesome experience that led to 25 litres of honey at the end of the 2024 season. The experience will be duplicated this year. We can’t wait.
Why do you participate in Adopt a Hive/What do you feel you gain fromparticipating in this program?
We participate because it feels awesome! It brings us closer to our community, our community’s bees and local commerce. Harvesting and using locally sourced raw honey is important to us. We are excited and appreciative to have this option available in our community. Knowing where our honey comes from is paramount to us. Further, the Adopt a Hive program has taught us about beekeeping and honey bees.
What is your favourite part about this program?
It’s hard to say what our favourite part is. The extraction process was fantastic. Dave the Beekeeper explained in detail the step by step process and guided us through doing it ourselves. Awesome!
Having 25 litres of jarred honey at home; honey that we extracted ourselves is extremely gratifying.
