You can buy a jar of honey.

Or you can follow the hive that made it.

That is the idea behind Adopt-a-Hive at Backed By Bees.

The program gives people a way to stay connected to a working honey bee colony through the season; following its growth, learning what the bees are doing, and eventually taking home honey from the harvest.

It is part education.Part stewardship. And part really good honey.

What is the Adopt-a-Hive program?

The Adopt-a-Hive program connects an individual or family with a managed honey bee colony cared for by professional beekeepers.

At Backed By Bees, members follow the life of their colony as it moves through the beekeeping season.

That means seeing more than the end product.

You get to follow what happens between spring buildup, summer honey flow, harvest, and preparation for winter.

The hive becomes a way to understand the season.

Do I have to look after the bees myself?

No.

We do the beekeeping.

That includes caring for the colony, inspecting the hive, monitoring its health, managing the season, and harvesting the honey.

Your job is much easier.

Follow along.

Learn.

Ask questions.

And enjoy the honey.

We’ve got the bee part covered.

What do Adopt-a-Hive members receive?

The program is designed to give members more than a one-time product.

Throughout the season, members can follow their hive through updates, photos, milestones, and stories from the bee yard.

At harvest time, members receive honey connected to the program.

That means the jar at the end of the season has context.

You know what happened before it reached the table.

Why adopt a hive instead of just buying honey?

Both matter.

Buying local honey supports beekeeping.

Adopting a hive goes one step further by creating an ongoing relationship with the colony and the landscape supporting it.

You begin noticing things differently.

When do the bees start flying?

What is blooming?

Why is one year’s honey different from another?

What happens when the weather changes?

A jar of honey becomes the end of a much bigger story.

Is Adopt-a-Hive a good gift?

Yes, especially for someone who values experiences more than more stuff.

An Adopt-a-Hive membership can work well for:

  • families
  • grandparents
  • gardeners
  • nature lovers
  • teachers
  • food lovers
  • people interested in sustainability
  • the person who is genuinely difficult to buy for

Unlike a gift that is opened once, this one keeps showing up throughout the season.

The recipient gets something to follow, learn from, and eventually taste.

What happens throughout the beekeeping season?

The hive changes constantly.

Spring

The colony begins growing rapidly as warmer weather and new forage arrive.

Early summer

Bee populations expand and the colony works the surrounding landscape.

Honey season

When conditions are right, bees bring nectar back to the hive and build honey stores.

Harvest

Once honey is ready and colony needs have been considered, we begin removing and extracting surplus honey.

Fall

The focus changes again.

The colony begins preparing for winter, and the beekeeper does too.

That seasonal progression is one of the best parts of adopting a hive.

You do not just see the result.

You see the process.

Where are the hives?

Backed By Bees is rooted in Ontario and in the landscapes where our bees forage.

The bees interact with whatever the season provides, trees, gardens, wildflowers, crops, weather, and everything else happening around them.

That is why no two seasons are exactly the same.

And neither is the honey.

Can I visit the bees?

One of the goals of Adopt-a-Hive is to make the connection more tangible.

Depending on the program tier and season, members can have opportunities to experience parts of the hive and harvest process firsthand.

Those moments matter.

Seeing a frame full of bees or watching honey being extracted changes the way you look at the jar afterward.

Why does Backed By Bees offer hive adoption?

Because pollinators are the portal.

Bees make a much bigger system easier to see.

Follow one hive and you quickly begin learning about flowers, weather, food, biodiversity, farming and the landscape around you.

That is what interests us most.

Honey is great.

But understanding where it came from is even better.

This year's honey is ready

For our current Adopt-a-Hive members, this is the moment the season comes full circle.

The honey from this year’s program is ready.

Months of colony growth, forage, weather, beekeeping and harvest finally end up in the jar.

And then the cycle starts again.

Adopt a Hive

If you want to do more than simply buy honey, Adopt-a-Hive is a way to follow the real story behind it.

The bees do the work.

We help you see it.
